Science Foundation Ireland and six Irish higher education institutions developed Spectroscopy in a Suitcase programme. This brings portable infrared and UV-Visible spectrometers to schools all over the country.
It is an outreach activity which gives school students, such as the fifth year Chemistry students in Presentation De la Salle College the chance to learn about spectroscopy through hands-on experience. As well as covering the principles of spectroscopic techniques. The activities used real-life contexts to demonstrate the applications of the techniques.
The kit was hosted by Universities and event was delivered by Trinity College Dublin staff John O'Donoghue – (Royal Society of Chemistry Education Coordinator, Ireland) and other University staff. They had a strong emphasis on encouraging school students to consider studying chemistry at third level
